The Best Weird Trick For Deodorizing Something You Can’t Wash

Eliminate Odors

Much like any good relationship, my relationship with all of you is not a one-way street. Itโ€™s an exchange of ideas and information that goes both ways! Every so often, I receive emails or comments from readers who are willing to share their own tips and tricks with me, and I love that! I learn so much from all of you, and I think we make a great team. :-)

Speaking of reader emails, I recently received an excellent one from a reader named Caroline sharing the brilliant method she used to deodorize some oriental rugs she’d inherited. After various other attempts had failed to remove the strong smell of cats from her expensive rugs, Caroline finally honed in on a solution that worked: cat litter!

I gave Carolineโ€™s method a try on one of my own less-than-fresh rugs at home, and it worked like a charm! I think this brilliant tip could be a real life-saver in certain situations, so thatโ€™s exactly what Iโ€™ll be sharing with you today!

Eliminate Odors

Why Use Cat Litter To Eliminate Odors?

Cat litter makes an excellent deodorizer because it contains odor-eliminating ingredients, such as baking soda or activated charcoal. Continuously neutralizing litter box odors is no small feat, so just imagine what cat litter could do for other household odors!

Another advantage of using cat litter is that it is highly absorbent. (It has to contend with cat urine, after all!) Unpleasant odors are often related to dampness and moisture, and cat litter can help draw out any moisture that might be contributing to the odor.

When you take both the deodorizing and absorbent effects of cat litter into consideration, the idea of using it to fight odors on other surfaces suddenly doesn’t seem quite so far-fetched! :-)

Eliminate Odors

What Can I Deodorize With Cat Litter?

One of the best applications for this method is to freshen up items that you canโ€™t wash in your washing machine. Itโ€™s also useful for eliminating odors from items that are technically machine-washable, but that shouldnโ€™t be washed very frequently.

For example, I try to avoid washing my rugs too frequently because Iโ€™ve found that the backing eventually starts to peel away after a certain number of washes. So cat litter is a great option for keeping those types of items fresh between washes!

Eliminate Odors

Here are some other things you could deodorize with the help of cat litter:

  • Rugs
  • Furniture cushions
  • Curtains
  • Heirloom quilts
  • Lace
  • Shoes
  • Pet beds

Hereโ€™s how itโ€™s done, so you can try this method at home for yourself!

How To Use Cat Litter To Eliminate Odors

Eliminate Odors

Youโ€™ll need:

  • Cat litter (any odor-eliminating variety will work)
  • Large trash bags

Directions:

Eliminate Odors

Take the item that you want to deodorize and put it into a large, sturdy trash bag.

Eliminate Odors

Pour a generous amount of cat litter into the trash bag. (You canโ€™t really add โ€œtoo muchโ€ cat litter to the bag. Use at least a few cups of litter, or more for larger items.)

Eliminate Odors

Tie the trash bag so it is sealed up tightly, and let it sit for 1-2 days, or up to a week. (If your item really smells, leave it alone for a full week.)

When the wait is up, remove the item from the bag and shake off any excess cat litter. Then use your vacuum to remove any lingering litter dust, and youโ€™re done! The item should smell fresh and clean.

Eliminate Odors

So there you have it! I just want to give another quick shout-out to Caroline for sharing this brilliant tip with us. Iโ€™ve already benefited from learning about it, and Iโ€™m sure you will find it just as useful! :-)

  1. “Cat litter makes an excellent deodorizer because it contains odor-eliminating ingredients, such as baking soda or activated charcoal.” Not ALL kitty litters do. Odor-eliminating litters may be fine for deodorizing things you can’t wash, just DON’T use them in your cat’s litter box!

  2. What would work to get mold smell out of paper? The humidity has been really high and gotten into our fire safe box we keep all our important papers in. I tried adding the desiccant packages but it didnโ€™t change the smell. Any ideas of what would help?

Please log in or create a free account to comment.
    • Jennifer, I would first remove the papers and let them dry out in a dry, well ventilated area. If the documents are delicate, place them in an open box with baking soda and activated charcoal. Clean the safe with a mild bleach solution and let dry, completely. To prevent mold from growing again, I would suggest putting activated charcoal along with the desiccant packages. You can even put some cat litter in the safe. Good luck :-)

  3. Hi Jillee, I see this was asked in 2019 in the comments – clumping or non-clumping. It should always be the non-clumping variety. While it’s true the clumping type will work, the risk is that moisture causes the litter to turn into “clay cement” on your item – just like wet clumping litter does in a catbox. I wouldn’t risk it.

  5. Crumpled up newspaper works as a great deodorizer. You can stuff it into musty drawers, smelly boots, etc,. Leave it for a day or two, or longer for stronger odors. Then just throw the newspaper away. It will have absorbed the odor, without leaving any other scent.

  6. I swear by a product called ODERMUTE, available at some pet places or (best price) Amazon. I is made for ORGANIC smells, pet accideents, human accidents, mold, etc. It is an ENZYME, you mix up the solution (sandy powder, or I think there is now a liquid version) and use. Can use on a sponge, in your washer, pail, etc. We do wild animal rehab and a long ago vet suggested this, it was what they deodorized pet areas with. The important thing is LET IT DRY NATURALLY, not in the dryer. Hard or soft items. Have been using this for 40+ years!

    • Do you think this would work on a dog urine smell (no stain, just odor) in my carpet? If so, what would be your suggestion on how to apply it? Iโ€™d be forever grateful if it works!

  7. Hey, Jilllee! This is a great tip. When I was still a teenager, scat I was babysitting peed on a pile of my clothes. I was afraid I would have to throw them away. At the time I was dirt poor so had to use my shampoo to wash them. After the wash, no smell. Then after they were dry, I had my mom and several friends smell them to make sure. They were shocked to learn what happened- well, my mom knew of course. It was cheap shampoo too! So now I know a way for things that canโ€™t be washed. Thank you! Hopefully Iโ€™ll never have a cat do that again though.

    • My male cat decided to urinate on some dirty laundry, and I managed to get the smell out by washing with vinegar. My cat is a sweetheart, but he’s not known for his cat brains so I now keep dirty laundry in plastic hampers with lids. I discovered a long time ago that plain clay litter doesn’t work at all well for male cats, but fortunately most litters sold now have built-in deodorizers.

  8. try ‘nokout’ you can find it on line. it takes out ANY smell. we once moved into a temp rental and it was awful, it had been cleaned but the tile floor around the toilet still smelled. used this product and no more smell! it works on fabric, wood, and so much more!

    • Pervasive urine odor around a toilet is a ‘replace the wax seal’ warning.

  9. there is a product called ‘nok out’ that is great and easier to use than doing the cat litter thing. you just spray it on. it doesn’t take much, and can be used also on furniture and a lot of other items in your home. it is a bit pricy, but over the long run it can be used on so many things it pays for itself.
and it gets even the works on cigaret smoke! even skunk!

  10. When I throw out leftovers, I use the same bag to clean the kitty litter box, but I never thought outside the “box.” I am definitely doing this to my husband’s work boots! Thanks, Jillee!

  11. I refuse to buy rugs with the rubber backing on them. They eventually crumble from drying out or whatever it is that happens to them. I have used baking soda to deodorize things, but never thought about using cat litter. Great post. Thank you for sharing

  12. I have a large wooden kitchen trash can and I keep a layer of newspaper on the bottom with a layer of cat litter on top of it. I also put a scoop into each new trash bag as it goes in – it’s helped so much to keep kitchen odors down and from absorbing into the wood.

  13. I use unscented silicon cat litter to keep the inside of my car windows from frosting up in the winter. I have a large sedan so I pour about 4 cups in an old sock and stash it underneath a seat. I havenโ€™t had to scrap my inside windows in years.

  14. You can put a bit of litter in a bandanna, tie it up tightly, and put it into smelly boots/shoes. Donโ€™t use so much that no air can circulate in the shoe/boot. • I don’t know if my tip is healthy or not but if it is effective. Fill the container with water and dish soap and a good amount of bleach, close the container and with the lid down leave it for a week, the smell will go away. To remove the bleach that may have been absorbed by the plastic repeat but this time use water and baking soda only.

Please log in or create a free account to comment.
      • I’ve had really good luck using about equal parts vinegar and water in plastic containers, vinegar will kill almost any smell! I use bleach too, but I try to keep it out of plastic containers…something sticks in what’s left of my brain that the plastic might absorb some of the bleach…good luck! :)

  16. Hi. I have been using cat crystals for years.

  20. It’s worth a try! I would also try placing bowls of white vinegar inside the drawers for a few days. Vinegar is great for removing odors! :-)

  21. It’s definitely worth a try! You might have to leave it in the bag for a few days, but I think it will help quite a bit. Let me know how it turns out! :-)

  22. Chalk definitely helps absorb some of the odor – in fact, it works a lot like the kitty litter does, it’s just smaller! I would try the kitty litter method in this post – I think it should work wonderfully! It will just be a little difficult to get the dust off afterwards, but just use a lint roller to get off any remaining bits. Best of luck! :-)

  23. What could you suggest for human incontinence pads. The urine odor is strong in the bathroom where they are disposed of, and the large trash bin outside….and in the heat of summer itโ€™s very noticeable.

    • I would try sprinkling baking soda straight into the trash cans. Kitty litter in the trash would work well, too!

    • ODORMUTE
Buy at some pet places or AMAZON, it’s made for these organic odors. Have used it for decades for wild animal housing, pet & human accidents, diaper pails, etc. LET IT DRY NATURALLY, you can mix as strong as you need, it’s NOT a cover up.

  24. For years I have kept a small bowl/pot of kitty litter in both my front and back yards as a place for discarded Cigarettes. It works!. Not only does it get rid of the smoke odor but it puts out the Cigarette in a safe manner and you don’t have to worry about the mess of “smashed” out old Cigarettes scattered on the ground. When the bowl/pot is full you just take it to the trash and dispose the top layer of kitty litter alone with the Cigarettes. I’m a non=smoker and I get a bad sinus infection if around second hand smoke, plus I find the smell of any Cigarettes foul .

  25. You should check if your hope chest has a cedar lining. If so, take some fine-grain sandpaper and lightly sand all sides, bottom & top. Wipe away the dust and close the lid for a day or two. Your hope chest will return to its original cedar smell.

  26. One of the best solutions for this problem is simply to water the lawn! Use an oscillating sprinkler daily in the area of the yard that the animals mostly use. The water will slowly dilute the urine and allow it to seep into the soil. :-)

  27. Sure! Standard, cheap litter will pull out odors, but you could use a scented litter to add a fresh scent, too :-)

  28. As someone who uses kitty litter for dozens of things besides cats I wouldnโ€™t sprinkle it on a rug or put it in my shoes.
I would certainly never ever put kitty litter directly on a quilt. It will get into the fibers and batting and it can ruin a family treasure.
Instead, put some litter in a old sock or other fiber bag to put in your shoes or seal up with stinky bedding. A rubber tote or ice chest can be used instead of a trash bag. They seal tight and make bulky items easier to manage. The odors will penetrate the fabric while the gritty, dusty, sandy texture of the litter wonโ€™t penetrate your bedding or rugs or shoes.
    Thatโ€™s my two cents.

  29. Love this post.. especially since I’m a smoker!
For shoes, do you have to pour the kitty litter inside the shoes, or is it good enough to just be in the bag with the kitty litter?

    • Inside the shoes is best – especially if the shoes are really stinky!

  30. Wish I’d thought of that! I’m taking a class, and one of the books they recommend as a resource happened to be in the DI (thrift store) for a buck. I bought it with intent to share with classmates, but when I tried to re-read it, it smelled so musty-dusty that I threw it away. Cat litter might have made the difference.

  31. Hi Jillee, I too would like to know how to do this for a large rug?

  32. Can you sprinkle the cat litter all over a large rug (like as in Carpet Fresh)?

    • Yes, although I would still put in a trash bag, if you can :-)

  33. Another use for litter is to absorb oil spills in the garage. I keep a bag just for that purpose.

Please log in or create a free account to comment.
  34. Is the litter clumping or non-clumping? I could assume non-clumping, but wasn’t sure. Your example of the Paws brand didn’t say on the package. Can the litter be reused for another item? How long before it no longer works? Can multiple items be used in the same bag if they fit?

    Thanks.

Please log in or create a free account to comment.
    • The litter used in the pictures is non clumping. Clumping litter has a finer texture.

Please log in or create a free account to comment.
    • Non-clumping! The litter can be reused until it starts to smell bad. The amount of uses you get out of the litter really just depends on how stinky the items you’re deodorizing are. :-)

  35. This ideia sounds really great and I’ll no doubt give it a go on my dogs beds but what I’d like to know is if the cat litter can be used again, let’s say after said week, or if it has to be thrown away

Please log in or create a free account to comment.
    • I do not the answer to your question, but would be interested to know. However, to continue my previous post, I am sure the litter could be used for oil spills as it is only to absorb the oil and I have known of people who keep litter in their vehicle in winter to put in front or behind wheels when you are stuck in ice or snow.

Please log in or create a free account to comment.
    • It can be reused most of the time. If the kitty litter itself starts to smell, then throw it out :-)

Please log in or create a free account to comment.
  36. This is interesting. Iโ€™ve owned Cats before and would have never thought of this. I used to joke that when our driveway would get icy in Winter to just use some un-used litter. What Iโ€™ve used on items that arenโ€™t wasable is Febreze. It works great on non-washable items.

Please log in or create a free account to comment.
    • Funny you mentioned the driveway. One time my driveway very icy so I used at litter — but I used the USED litter, thinking it wouldn’t make any difference. Ha ha on me — the poop got stuck in my car tires and got flung up under the wheels by the spinning tires. I made it up the driveway but the car stank until I got a deluxe under-bed car wash. I think there is no known use on this earth for used litter!

  37. That sounds like a great idea especially as the odour I want to get rid of is cat urine which is on the carpet in my office. This carpet was cleaned and smelled alright but it has now been wet by a leaking air-conditioner and the smell is over-powering. Will it work by just sprinkling on the carpet and laying, say newspaper over the top and weighing it down?

Please log in or create a free account to comment.
    • I would think this would work, but maybe use light coloured towels instead of newspaper. If the carpet’s still wet,the print may transfer to the carpet.

      • Nature’s Miracle-Advanced. Slosh it on the already-washed, affected area (I’m using it in my little green steam machine in the solution container & heavily spraying the affected area). My cat has gone rogue!

      • I have heard that Natures Miracle works great. But If you can find it Nil-Oder is awesome. We used the Tap-a-Drop on cotton balls and put them in a refrigerator that sat with food in it in 80-degree sun. The smell was terrible. Opened it a week later and the smell was gone. (Food still in it) (other things happening prevented us from getting to it sooner) I know the shampoo is great for pets with odor problems. Customers have said as long as they don’t get wet, they stay odor free up to a month.

    • I would try some baking soda it will pull out urine when you catch it right away. I would think it would work since it is rewetted(sp). Or most cat litter has baking soda in it is that onw of the ingredients that makes it work?

  34. Is the litter clumping or non-clumping? I could assume non-clumping, but wasn’t sure. Your example of the Paws brand didn’t say on the package. Can the litter be reused for another item? How long before it no longer works? Can multiple items be used in the same bag if they fit?

    Thanks.

    • The litter used in the pictures is non clumping. Clumping litter has a finer texture.

    • I do not the answer to your question, but would be interested to know. However, to continue my previous post, I am sure the litter could be used for oil spills as it is only to absorb the oil and I have known of people who keep litter in their vehicle in winter to put in front or behind wheels when you are stuck in ice or snow.

    • It can be reused most of the time. If the kitty litter itself starts to smell, then throw it out :-)

  36. This is interesting. Iโ€™ve owned Cats before and would have never thought of this. I used to joke that when our driveway would get icy in Winter to just use some un-used litter. What Iโ€™ve used on items that arenโ€™t wasable is Febreze. It works great on non-washable items.
